Winter and Humidity

With winter here many of us might not be realizing that the building is very dry and we most likely need to run humidifiers to protect our wood floors and walls etc from drying out.

The flooring people New Horizon used were here today and found one unit had only 15% humidity. This is not nearly enough as you need around 35-40%

I strongly recommend buying a humidifier and running it all winter.

  1. Now you mention this, since I moved in I find all of us here are having dry skin at times very serious and waken up in the middle of the night with headaches. That could explain yes it is very dry in here, anyways I set up my humidifier last night and noticed a big difference already. Thanks for the heads up.
Any follow up with filters yet?

    Thanks for your blog!

  2. You are most welcome, I too need to buy one and get it running.
I hope to have information on the filters following the next Board meeting at the end of this month

  3. This is crazy. I've been having headaches as well as just got diagnosed with eczema & I cough constantly from the dry air. I'm having major issues. Barry, any chance they can install a humidifier to the furnaces??

  4. The type of heating we have does not allow for add-on humidifier as far as I know. Remember, each unit has its own heating system. I strongly suggest you purchase a small humidifier at any store and use it all winter. My place now has 40% humidity since I put one in. they are not that expensive and go a long way to solving many issues with dry air.

  5. Dry air will cause headaches as well as dirty filter. Make sure your filter is clean, if you have the original filter from the builder you are way overdue to change it.

  6. Good point on the filter. You can try carefully vacuuming the filter until we get replacements. That will help a bit

  8. There was a board meeting a the end of January and there will be another near the end of February.
I have located a place to supply filters but they sell by the box and not individually. I a working to try and figure something out so we can all replace our filters and will let you know as soon as I can.

  10. Sorry, I did not get that link. The place that sells our filters is in Bolton and is called Air Mechanical. However they indicate they generally only sell in boxes of 50 filters. I would suggest for now buying the plain ones from a hardware store and cutting it to fit with scissors until we can figure something out. The main problem is each condo unit owns their own furnace so the condo corporation is not involved.

  11. I have noticed in the last few days the parking lot lights are out at night, when I drive in it is pitch black when they should be lit for safety and security reasons. Also the garage door seems to be more open then closed, I think that door is defective.

    1. See the new entry for more information on the garage doors. As for the lights, TAG is working on getting them fixed.

  13. Hi Barry and Residents,

While on the topic of air and air quality. The common areas, specifically the the 3rd floor hallways near the elevators smell of strong smoke. I have not had a day that I walk in or leave my apartment without smelling the smoke. I am very disappointed and quite concerned about the value of my property as well as my health. I have contacted TAG and they agreed no smell should linger in the hall and perhaps there is a ventilation or fan issue. Any suggestions on what should be done next about this situation? Hoping you can help.
